Certain Foods Linked too Increased Nightmares, New Research Reveals
New York, NY – What you eat may not only impact how you sleep, but what you dream. A recently published study indicates a strong correlation between dietary choices and the frequency of nightmares, with certain foods considerably increasing the risk of unsettling dreams.
The research, appearing in Frontiers in Psychology (2025), found that dairy products, particularly for individuals with lactose intolerance, are frequently associated with unpleasant dreams. ”Nightmare severity is robustly associated with lactose intolerance and other food allergies,” explains study leader Dr. Tore Nielsen. Researchers theorize that digestive discomfort caused by food sensitivities can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to more negative or bizarre dream experiences.Spicy foods and high sugar intake were also identified as potential nightmare triggers,due to their effects on body temperature and blood sugar levels,respectively.
According to the study, limiting these foods before bedtime may help reduce the likelihood of nightmares:
* Dairy products (especially for those with lactose intolerance)
* Spicy dinners
* Sugary snacks
Conversely, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables appears to promote better sleep quality and decrease the occurrence of nightmares.This research builds on growing understanding of the gut-brain connection and its influence on sleep and mental wellbeing.
