President Dan Affirms Georgescu’s Russian Ties, Details Emerging on 2024 Election Interference
In a Digi24 interview on Thursday, romanian President Nicușor Dan stated he is certain that Călin Georgescu acted as a proxy for Russian interests during the November 2024 presidential elections. Dan indicated the investigation into the matter is ongoing, stating, “at this moment we are somewhere in 30% of describing what happened in november 2024,” and that he possesses “some elements that have not yet been made public,” alongside “an intuition of the overall image.”
Responding directly to a question about Călin Georgescu, President Dan affirmed, “Yes,” when asked if he was certain Georgescu was “the man of the Russians” in the 2024 elections.
Dan explained that Romanian intelligence agencies did have facts regarding georgescu, but the methods employed were novel and swift. “The technological way used was so surprising for a very short period of time, two weeks, that they did not have the ability to intervene during this short interval.” He further noted the surprise extended beyond Romania’s intelligence community, stating, “It was a surprise not only for our information services…the partner services…they have an eye in the global world, so it was a surprise for everyone in which it has operated over a very short period of time.”
the President characterized the indictment drafted by the General Prosecutor’s Office as “very consistent,” asserting it provides “clear evidence on the side of influence, of electronic handling in the November 2024 elections.” He outlined three key findings from the Prosecutor’s Office: a system of systematic misinformation funded by russia, documented financing – currently totaling one million euros received approximately five to six months ago by Bogdan Peșchir – and an attempt to destabilize the electoral process, mirroring tactics previously used in African countries.
Dan also indicated he may request the declassification of information from the Supreme Council of the Country meeting held on December 6, but emphasized that the primary focus remains on fully detailing the events of November 2024.
Regarding potential domestic involvement, President Dan acknowledged possessing information but declined to elaborate at this time. He stated, “Georgescu was not a lonely rider who had a vision and convinced 2-3 million people. He had a network behind which Romanians with money were part,” adding that Georgescu received funding from “some money in Romania” ultimately originating from Moscow.
Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was sent to court by the General Prosecutor’s Office on September 16, under judicial control as February 26, facing charges of attempting to commit actions against the constitutional order and communicating false information.Horațiu Potra was also sent to court in the same case, accused of attempting actions against the constitutional order, violations related to weapons and explosives, and public incitement, alongside 20 other individuals.
