Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam’s top-ranked badminton player, is set to compete in the first round of the 2026 All England Open Badminton Championships today, March 4th, against Denmark’s Line Christophersen.
The All England Open, held in Birmingham, England, is considered the most prestigious tournament in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour system. The tournament, running from March 3rd to 8th, offers a total prize fund of $1.45 million.
This marks the beginning of a three-tournament European series for Linh, which will also include the Swiss Open and either the Orleans Masters or the French Open, concluding on March 22nd. The series is crucial for accumulating points and maintaining her world ranking.
Currently ranked 21st in the world, Linh will face Christophersen, ranked 38th, in the round of 32. Their previous encounters favor the Vietnamese player, with Linh winning their most recent match at the Malaysia Masters 2025, 2-1 (20-22, 21-11, 21-18). She also secured a 2-1 victory against Christophersen in the final of the Italian International 2017, giving her a 2-0 head-to-head record.
Despite her favorable record against Christophersen, Linh faced travel challenges arriving in England. A previous flight was canceled due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, requiring a journey exceeding 20 hours to reach Birmingham.
Should Linh overcome Christophersen, she will advance to the round of 16, where she could face either Yeo Yeo-min of Singapore or Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand. Inthanon is currently ranked 7th in the world.
