Newsom Marks Legal Victory Over Trump With Public Celebration, Renewed vow to Fight Federal Overreach
SAN FRANCISCO – California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly celebrated a legal win against former President Donald Trump, marking the occasion with a performance of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” and reaffirming his commitment to challenging federal overreach. The victory stems from a September ruling by Judge Charles R. Breyer of the Federal District Court in san Francisco, which found that Trump broke federal law when deploying National Guard members and Marines to Los Angeles during summer protests related to ICE raids.
Judge Breyer’s decision centered on the unprecedented nature of trump’s deployment. It marked the first time a President had deployed National Guard troops without a request from a state Governor as 1965, when President Lyndon B.Johnson federalized troops to protect civil rights marchers in Alabama during the Selma to Montgomery campaign led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Trump had extended the federalization and deployment of the National Guard in California until November 5, coinciding with a statewide general election. Newsom vowed to “continue his legal battle” despite the extension, stating, ”There was never a need-and there is certainly no need now-for troops to be deployed against their own communities,” and arguing that “Trump can’t justify keeping the military in Los Angeles… We won’t back down.”
The former President’s directive authorized the deployed troops to “perform military protective activities that the Secretary of Defense determines are reasonably necesary to ensure the protection and safety of federal personnel and property.” Newsom’s public response, including the song performance shared on X (formerly Twitter), underscores his ongoing opposition to the move and his determination to defend California’s sovereignty.
