Newark Football Seniors Driven by Win-or-Go-Home Mentality in Final Games
NEWARK, OH – Facing a critical three-game stretch to close out the regular season, Newark High school’s seniors are embracing a “must-win” mentality as they push for a postseason berth. The Wildcats (5-4 overall) currently sit 16th in their region and need strong performances in their remaining contests to climb the rankings and secure a playoff spot.
The team’s leadership, both on and off the field, is being spearheaded by key players like Jack Kopachy, bodie Smith, and others determined to leave a lasting legacy. This year’s senior class is focused not only on immediate success but also on building a foundation for the future of Newark football.
“jack is smart, studies the game and has grit,” said Head Coach Bill Franks. “He’s vrey supportive of the football program, and has done what he can every year to sell Newark football.”
Preston Franks is also demonstrating critically important growth, according to his coach. “Preston has learned his technique, and it shows,” Franks added. “He loves the game, has performed at a high level the whole year and continues to work on his leadership.”
Kopachy exemplified his commitment to the team by playing through an ankle injury against Pickerington Central, and is currently rehabbing to be ready for Friday’s game against Teays Valley.
“That shows his character and how much he cares about this team,” said Assistant Coach Lunsford.
Kopachy himself stated, “I’m not giving up on my guys.I want to be there with my brothers until the end.”
On the offensive side, quarterback Bodie Smith recently broke a Wildcat record, throwing his 43rd career touchdown pass against Pickerington Central, surpassing Grant Russell. Smith has completed 58% of his passes (88 of 152) for 1,734 yards and 21 scores, with seven interceptions.Wide receivers Alex Irvin-Royster (averaging 31.8 yards per catch with five touchdowns) and Jason giblin (27.9 yards per catch with six scores) are key targets in the passing game.
Defensively, Kopachy leads the team with 33 tackles and 41 assists, while Roy Price has recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss. The defensive strategy focuses on creating opportunities for linebackers to make plays.
“If we can get double teams on our defensive line, it lets the linebackers get downhill,” Kopachy explained.
The seniors are also prioritizing the advancement of younger players to ensure the program’s continued success.
“We want to bring the young guys along, and we’re all about making sure the program is set for 2026, 2027 and beyond,” Kopachy said.
Newark finds itself in a similar position to last year, having swept their final three games, but with one fewer loss. Teays Valley (5-4), currently 12th in Division II, Region 7, will be Newark’s opponent this Friday. Last year, Newark defeated Teays Valley 35-7.
“It’s all about belief,” Franks said. “And we have to believe we will finish strong.”
