New Zealand’s Oldest House Gets New Roof

August 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

New Zealand’s oldest standing house is undergoing a comprehensive re-roofing project to protect its historic structure, according to local reporting from 1News. Built in Kerikeri in 1835, the weatherboard dwelling known as Kemp House requires delicate preservation work to maintain its integrity against weathering and age.

Kerikeri preservation efforts target historic dwelling

The mission house, managed by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, sits on the picturesque Kerikeri basin in Northland. According to 1News, specialists are carefully stripping the aging roof materials to install modern protective measures that respect the building’s nearly two-century-old design. Carpenters and conservation architects face the challenge of securing the structure without altering its defining colonial-era silhouette.

Constructed by the Church Missionary Society under the direction of Reverend John Butler, Kemp House has stood through numerous seismic events and changing weather patterns. Heritage New Zealand officials noted that routine maintenance of this scale is essential for preventing water ingress and structural decay in the centuries-old timber frame.

Next steps in the conservation schedule

Work on the roof continues under the supervision of heritage building experts who are documenting each phase of the extraction and replacement process. Heritage New Zealand has scheduled subsequent inspections to evaluate the interior conditions once the exterior weatherproofing is fully secured.
