New PS5 Hardware Revision Improves Repairability and Liquid Metal Cooling

New PS5 Hardware Revision Improves Repairability and Liquid Metal Cooling

October 2, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Sony has quietly revised its PlayStation 5 hardware with a redesigned motherboard and a lower-cost HDMI retimer chip, entering circulation around the same time limited-edition Marvel’s Wolverine consoles appeared. The changes focus heavily on longevity, repairability, and manufacturing cost reductions, even as retail prices for the console have climbed significantly since its November 2020 launch.

Motherboard Revisions Target Repairability and Thermal Performance

The console hardware redesign takes clear cues from the PS5 Pro playbook. Spotted by Modyfikator89 on social media, the updated internal layout features a redesigned motherboard that offers easier access to the CR2023 battery and makes internal repairs notably less risky.

Thermal management also received an overhaul. The hardware incorporates refined liquid-metal containment and revised heatsink materials. An updated barrier around the processor die aims to keep liquid metal securely contained over time, maintaining stable thermal transfer performance even during intensive gaming loads.

Alongside structural updates, Sony integrated a newer, lower-cost HDMI retimer chip. This component change likely trims bill-of-materials costs while improving display signal stability and securing higher assembly yields during a period marked by challenging component sourcing.

Hardware Production Costs Fall While Retail Prices Climb

While the internal revisions reduce what it costs Sony to build the console, consumers face vastly different prices than they did on launch day. Companies routinely make stealth revisions to cut manufacturing costs, but unlike previous generations that shrank and became cheaper over time, the PS5 has grown more expensive since November 2020.

When the system debuted, the entry-level PS5 Digital Edition carried an MSRP of $400. By 2026, that same digital tier commands $600. The base model featuring a disc drive increased from $500 to $650, while the PS5 Pro climbed from $700 to $900.

AI-Upscaling Tech Arrives for Base Models Ahead of the Holiday Season

Sony is positioning the base hardware as a stronger value proposition heading into the lucrative holiday shopping season. This strategy is bolstered by the recent rollout of a new AI-upscaling technology for base-model PS5 units.

New PS5 Hardware Revision Improves Repairability and Liquid Metal Cooling

The upscaling tool, known as Quick Spectral Super Resolution, allows the base console to deliver sharper visuals in select games without requiring players to purchase the more expensive PS5 Pro. At present, only two exclusive titles support the technology—Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei—though Sony plans to expand software development access to more developers soon.

The revised PS5 hardware arrives as Sony prepares its inventory for the winter sales rush, matching updated internal components with software-driven visual enhancements.
