Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Base PS5 With QSSR
Sony is bringing AI-driven upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5, giving base console owners access to technology previously reserved for the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro.
The Tech TL;DR: Quick Spectral Super Resolution
- Core Upgrade: QSSR introduces AI-driven frame reconstruction to the base PlayStation 5 model, bypassing previous hardware limitations.
- Launch Titles: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are confirmed as the first games to integrate the QSSR library.
- Ecosystem Rollout: Sony is making the QSSR library available to all PlayStation developers to balance performance and resolution across aging hardware.
Engineering QSSR for Base Hardware Constraints
Quick Spectral Super Resolution utilizes a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on the standard PS5. Sony originally debuted PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as a flagship feature for the PS5 Pro, relying on per-pixel AI analysis to reconstruct higher-resolution frames from lower internal rendering targets. However, the high computational requirements of PSSR restricted it exclusively to the Pro console.
According to Sony, QSSR functions as a new performance tier of AI upscaling rather than a direct replacement for PSSR, which remains the primary solution on the PS5 Pro. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, stated via the official announcement that QSSR excels at resolving fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability previously unattainable on the base console.
Sony Shares QSSR Library with PlayStation Developers
Sony intends to distribute the QSSR library to all external and internal PlayStation developers, offering studios a viable tool to manage rendering budgets without sacrificing visual fidelity. As Sony continues to refine its upscaling framework in collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, base console owners can anticipate sharper visuals in supported titles.
While QSSR delivers significant software-level improvements, technical evaluations emphasize that it will not convert a standard PS5 into a PS5 Pro.
