The artwork serves as a powerful visual reminder of the contributions of Black-owned businesses and the importance of maintaining spaces that foster community.
The barbershop, currently co-owned and operated by Cornell Hill, carries on the tradition of welcoming all. Hill still uses tools gifted by his grandfather, including the original clippers and razor, symbols of a legacy built on skill and inclusivity.
“I’m open to anybody who wants to come in [for a] cut – straight hair,Afro hair,” Hill saeid. “Because hair is hair. … We’re one nation under god, meaning we need to learn to deal with all walks of life – in hair textures and hairstyles.”
Located on East 12th Street, Ideal Barbershop has witnessed and weathered significant changes in Austin, remaining a constant presence throughout the city’s evolution. The mural, commissioned by a local arts institution, aims to ensure the shop’s story continues to be told for years to come.
