France to Supply Ukraine with Next-generation Air Defense Systems
A new agreement signed today between French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will see Ukraine receive “new generation” Samp-T air defense systems, currently in development. The commitment was announced during a joint press conference held in Paris.
The Samp-T system, produced by the European Eurosam consortium - comprised of Mbda Italia, Mbda France, and Thales – offers enhanced anti-missile capabilities compared to the first generation system already delivered to Ukraine.
“The acquisition of new anti-air defense systems, new generation Samp-T, which are under development,” Macron stated at the Élysée Palace, adding that deployment to Ukrainian territory is planned to begin in 2026, “completing the capabilities you already know but with new performances.”
President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of the upgrade, stating, ”We already have the first generation ones and I thank Emmanuel for this, but the new generation is a very vital, very serious level.” He further noted the system’s potential against ballistic missiles, adding,”The new generation of Samp-T will also work against the ballistic missiles of our enemy,” referencing Russia. Zelenskyy declined to disclose specific delivery dates for the systems, citing thier strategic importance.
Sources at the Élysée Palace, as reported by French media, indicate the agreement covers the delivery of eight next-generation Samp-T systems to Ukraine. This latest commitment builds on existing air defense support, with Ukraine already utilizing Patriot systems against ballistic missile threats.
