New Blood Interactive Prioritizes Players Over Profit, Confirms Switch 2 Support

New Blood Interactive, the independent publisher known for retro-inspired shooters like Dusk and Amid Evil, has reaffirmed its commitment to multi-platform releases despite acknowledging the financial advantages of focusing solely on Steam. According to New Blood Interactive co-founder Dave Oshry, the decision to port titles to consoles is driven by a desire to serve its player base, even when those releases are less profitable than PC sales.

“If we only cared about money, we wouldn’t ship on anything but Steam,” Oshry told RPG Site in a recent interview. He explained that while Steam remains the most financially viable platform for New Blood’s games, the process of releasing on consoles involves lengthy certification procedures, rigid requirements and limited flexibility for updates and modifications compared to PC. Despite these challenges, the company continues to pursue console ports.

Oshry emphasized that New Blood’s strategy isn’t about maximizing profit, but responding to player demand. “We do it because our players want it,” he stated. “When the community asks for Xbox or PlayStation versions, we take on the extra effort to deliver, even if console sales are significantly lower than on PC.”

The publisher is too preparing for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, with Oshry confirming that Nintendo has already provided New Blood with development kits for the new console. This suggests a strong possibility of future New Blood titles appearing on the platform. Oshry noted that the Switch 2’s system architecture doesn’t differ significantly from the original Switch, and cited Dusk’s performance on the new hardware as a positive indicator. He described the game running at 120 frames per second with mouse control on the Switch 2 as “fantastic.”

New Blood Interactive’s portfolio extends beyond its established “boomer shooter” titles. The company is currently developing Dungeons of Dusk, a dungeon crawler RPG set in the Dusk universe. A demo for the game is currently available through Steam Next Fest, with a full release planned for later this year. The game has been frequently referred to as “Dusk RPG” by fans and developers alike, though its official title is Dungeons of Dusk.

Oshry also discussed the company’s broader approach to platform distribution, stating that New Blood Interactive’s commitment to releasing on multiple platforms is a reflection of its dedication to its players, rather than a purely business-driven decision. He reiterated that the studio prioritizes fulfilling community requests, even when those requests don’t align with maximizing revenue.
