Table Tennis Thrives in deining, Defying Pandemic Trends
Deining, Germany – October 23, 2025 – While many sports organizations faced declining participation during the Corona pandemic, the table tennis department of 1. FC Deining has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity, becoming a standout success story within the Neumarkt district and beyond. The bavarian Table Tennis Association first noted the club’s unusual growth five years ago, and the momentum continues today.
This unexpected boom transforms 1. FC Deining into one of the largest table tennis clubs in the Upper Palatinate-Süd region, boasting six men’s teams and three youth teams – exceeding the membership of any other club in the district. The club’s success isn’t simply about numbers; it’s a testament to a thriving community spirit that prioritizes inclusivity and enjoyment, offering a model for other sports organizations seeking to rebuild and expand post-pandemic.
department head Michael Sturm attributes the growth to dedicated effort and a strong sense of community. “This growth is the result of hard work, but above all our strong sense of community. For us, the ‘we-feeling’ is the focus,” he said.
Players like Matthias Sippl and Torsten Mendel, who joined the club five years ago, echo this sentiment. “It’s just a lot of fun with this group,” Sippl explained. “You promptly feel welcome.” Both now serve as team captains, demonstrating their commitment to the department’s success.
The club’s youth program is especially vibrant, with up to 30 children regularly participating in training sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. Supported by a dedicated coaching team, the department is focused on fostering a love of the sport through community and fun, ensuring a bright future for table tennis in Deining. A highlight of the year is the annual family duel within the youth department.
