Case management Firm NCM UK Pioneers Rigorous Standards for Neurological Rehabilitation Therapists
LONDON – A leading case management firm, NCM UK, has spent two years achieving rigorous regulatory standards, aiming to elevate care quality adn build a nationwide network of highly vetted therapists specializing in neurological rehabilitation. The firm’s commitment reflects a growing push for accountability within a sector traditionally facing limited oversight, according to Managing Director, paul Gascoigne.
NCM UK is now both IRCM regulated and CQC registered – a process Gascoigne describes as “gruelling” but ultimately “worth it.” currently, only approximately one-third of UK case management firms hold CQC registration.
The firm’s standards extend beyond it’s own operations, impacting the therapists it collaborates with. NCM UK mandates that all therapists working with the firm adhere to CQC standards, even if they aren’t directly CQC registered themselves. “When we get inspected, if any therapists aren’t performing at that level, CQC will say, ‘you should not have brought them on board.’ That could jeopardise our registration,” Gascoigne explained.
This emphasis on quality control addresses a critical need for consistent, long-term support for patients, especially after formal rehabilitation concludes. NCM UK is increasingly facilitating “informal physio” by equipping families to continue therapy programs designed by qualified professionals. “Recently, we’ve had a physio write a program of tasks to do every day that the family now roll out themselves,” Gascoigne said.”They’re working directly with the physio so their son has, in effect, informal physio every day via the family.”
The evolving role of therapists also requires ongoing professional development, with many now undertaking additional responsibilities like writing expert witness reports. Gascoigne views the increased credibility of the sector as beneficial for both patients and the industry. He likened the firm’s regulatory status to a trusted certification: “If your boiler was broken, you wouldn’t ask your neighbor to come around with a bag of spanners… You’d go online to a CORGI registered engineer. Because we’re IRCM regulated, that’s the CORGI register part of what we are now.”
Ultimately, NCM UK’s efforts aim to provide peace of mind to families navigating complex neurological rehabilitation journeys. “You just want someone with all the badges of honour who can produce a very high standard of care so you know your child is looked after,” Gascoigne concluded.
