Navy Rescue Swimmer Saves Driver After Car Plunges into Virginia Beach Water

A Navy rescue swimmer is being hailed a hero after swiftly responding to a vehicle that drove into the water at a Virginia Beach boat ramp on January 18, 2026.The quick actions of the swimmer were instrumental in saving the life of the driver.

According to a statement released by the Virginia Beach Police Department,the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM at the Lesner Bridge boat ramp. A vehicle, described as a silver sedan, unexpectedly accelerated and entered the Elizabeth River. Witnesses immediately called 911.

Fortunately, a Navy rescue swimmer, whose name has not been officially released pending notification of family, was nearby and immediately responded. Without hesitation, the swimmer swam to the submerged vehicle and successfully extracted the driver. The driver, identified as 72-year-old Robert Miller of Virginia Beach, was conscious but disoriented.

“The speed and bravery of the Navy rescue swimmer were critical in this situation,” said Virginia Beach Police Department spokesperson, Officer Sarah Thompson. “Seconds mattered, and their immediate action undoubtedly saved Mr. Miller’s life.”

Miller was transported to Virginia beach General Hospital for evaluation. His condition is currently listed as stable. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, but preliminary reports suggest a possible mechanical failure or medical emergency may have contributed to the accident. WAVY-TV 10 reported that investigators are reviewing security footage from the boat ramp.

Though, a spokesperson stated that the Navy is “extremely proud” of the swimmer’s heroic actions and commitment to serving the community.
