NASCAR DQ: Unprecedented Hose Detachment Penalty?

Anthony Alfredo’s hopes for a starting spot in the 66th Daytona 500 were dashed Friday following a post-qualifying inspection, NASCAR officials confirmed. The disqualification elevates Casey Mears into the field and allows BJ McLeod to qualify, filling the final open spot.

Alfredo had initially secured a provisional starting position through the second Duel qualifying race on Thursday night, finishing 17th. However, the inspection revealed an issue that led to the disqualification, according to a report from the Daytona Beach News-Journal. The specific nature of the failure was not immediately detailed by NASCAR.

The change in the lineup comes after Casey Mears raced to a Daytona 500 starting spot, and McLeod was positioned to qualify should a spot open. The disqualification of Alfredo created that opportunity.

Joey Logano and Chase Elliott won their respective Duel races, securing preferred starting positions for Sunday’s main event. LaJoie crashed during the first Duel race, opening a spot that Mears ultimately filled before Alfredo’s disqualification reshaped the field again.

The Daytona 500 starting lineup is now set, with the field comprised of qualifying drivers and charter teams. The race is scheduled to initiate Sunday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway.
