NASA satellite imagery has confirmed a series of submarine volcanic eruptions in the Bismarck Sea, north of Papua New Guinea, resulting in the emergence of new landmasses. The eruptions are significant enough to alter the local seafloor topography, building up material until it breaks the surface of the ocean.

The volcanic activity has been punctuated by frequent, high-magnitude earthquakes in the region surrounding Papua New Guinea. As the volcanic material reaches the surface and cools, it often fragments into pumice. This volcanic rock has been reported floating in large quantities in the waters off Sarmi and Biak, Papua.
