Anisimova Advances to US Open Semifinals, Eyes Rematch with Swiatek
NEW YORK – Amanda Anisimova is one step closer to a potential rematch with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the US Open, securing her place in the semifinals with a dominant run through the tournament. This marks Anisimova’s best ever result at the US Open, considerably surpassing her previous record of three main-draw match wins at Flushing meadows.”It’s super special,” Anisimova said after her fourth-round victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia, 6-0, 6-3, on Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “Going into this [tournament] I truly was taking it one match at a time. Like, never realy made it this far at the US Open, so it really means a lot.”
The 2023 US Open represents a breakthrough Grand Slam season for the world no. 9. Anisimova has already achieved a career-best 14-3 record at major tournaments this year, fueled by a Wimbledon final appearance, this US Open quarterfinal, and a fourth-round showing at Roland Garros – exceeding her total of 10 major wins from 2022.
Anisimova’s resilience has been particularly evident following her defeat in the Wimbledon final. Despite initial struggles, she has rebounded to win six of her last eight matches. ”Bouncing back from that actually was a little bit arduous, as that never happened to me before,” Anisimova admitted.”But I’ve worked through it, and the hardcourt season started off strong for me. I feel like I have moved on from that at this point.”
She views the Wimbledon final as a valuable learning experience. “[The Wimbledon final] wasn’t a good performance by any means. I feel like maybe I learned some things from it and some things I can do differently, but above all, I think it was just a learning experience.”
Anisimova acknowledges the unique challenges of playing at the US Open. “I know how hard it is to play at this Slam, just because it’s the city, and I feel like ther’s a lot going on. Also being a home Slam, it puts a little bit more pressure on the American players, I think. But I really just tried to embrace it, I think, since the first day that I got here.”
Now, Anisimova sets her sights on the semifinals, where a potential clash with Swiatek looms – a rematch she will undoubtedly be prepared for.
