Shipping Container Huts and Short Beds Fuel South Korean Frustration
The Asian Games, held in the city of Nagoya and the wider Aichi prefecture, opened against the backdrop of an unprecedented housing crunch. Unlike previous editions, organizers did not construct a dedicated athletes’ village.
Athletes exceeding two meters in height found themselves unable to stretch their legs out on the provided beds. Compounding the physical discomfort, basketball team member Byeon Jun-hyeong published social media footage displaying a leaking sink and a soaked floor inside his temporary hut, accompanied by a plea for help.
External delegations also scrambled to adapt. Meanwhile, torrential downpours last week forced hundreds of athletes to evacuate their quarters temporarily as record rainfall lashed Nagoya.
Unprecedented Delegations Strain Aichi-Nagoya Organizing Committee Budgets
The logistical strain stems from a significant mismatch between projected attendance and actual arrivals. More than 17,000 athletes and officials descended on the region—surpassing typical Olympic figures—while local organizers initially anticipated roughly 15,000 participants. In August, organizers defended their preparations by stating they possessed neither the manpower nor the financial budget to handle the ballooning numbers.
A joint statement issued by local organizers and the Olympic Council of Asia maintained that all participants registered prior to the July deadline would receive appropriate lodging. However, a Korean Sport & Olympic Committee official stated that delegation members from multiple nations faced shortages across the Aichi-Nagoya footprint.
Alternative housing strategies varied by nation. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino confirmed that while all Filipino athletes received beds, coaches and other team officials were relocated to external hotels and Airbnb. Indian and South Korean officials continued discussions with committees to address ongoing deficits. Meanwhile, corporate bodies and delegations managing large contingents increasingly leaned on commercial real estate and housing agencies to secure stable, off-site infrastructure.
Cruise Ships and Regional Hotels Absorb Overflow as Competitions Begin
With football and basketball matches already underway ahead of the official Sept 19 opening ceremony, supplementary housing measures went into effect. The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena arrived to accommodate between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes. Other participants stayed in traditional hotels spread as far away as Tokyo, where swimming, diving, and equestrian events were scheduled.
The Singapore National Olympic Council stated it remained in active coordination with the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organizing Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia to manage accommodations for its 304-strong delegation, ensuring athletes like modern pentathlete Tahir Ahmed Ansari could compete uninterrupted starting Sept 16 at Anjo Sports Park.
As organizers attempt to stabilize the remaining influx of competitors, the housing shortfall highlights the immense logistical vulnerabilities facing modern multi-sport mega-events when host cities scale back dedicated infrastructure.
