Governance Failures and Ministerial Intervention
The sports ministry issued its suspension order following a series of unaddressed administrative breakdowns within the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). According to Reuters, the five-page ministerial document cited numerous governance deficiencies, including appointing officials without following proper procedures, failing to conduct required elections, and raising transparency concerns regarding athlete selection criteria.
Adding to the administrative strain, the ministry highlighted continuing differences between TTFI president Meghna Ahlawat and secretary general Kamlesh Mehta. The ministry stated that their discord severely affected decision-making and risked harming athletes’ interests. This penalty strips the federation of financial assistance from the government and other benefits tied to its status as a recognized national sports federation. The decision follows an initial show-cause notice issued to TTFI on June 30. Although the federation responded on July 7, the ministry determined that the explanation failed to adequately address the raised concerns.
Asian Games Preparations and Interim Administration
The suspension arrives at a precarious time for Indian athletes. The table tennis team is set to compete at the upcoming multi-sport event in Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026, across Aichi Prefecture and its capital, Nagoya. Seeking to limit disruption for the players, the sports ministry asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to establish temporary administrative arrangements.
According to the ministry order, authorities requested the IOA to take appropriate steps in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to constitute an interim mechanism. This ad hoc committee will govern the sport until a duly compliant governance structure is restored within TTFI. Meanwhile, Sportstar reported that India’s participation in the Asian Games is unlikely to be affected by the administrative shift, though uncertainty surrounds team preparations and upcoming exposure trips.
Questions also surround the tenure of Foreign Expert Massimo Constantini, whose term ended on May 15. Although verbally assured of an extension as High Performance Director, his appointment has not been formalized, and his travel plans have been put on hold.
Athlete Controversies and Domestic Tournament Schedules
The national federation has weathered a turbulent period over recent months. In June, top paddler Manika Batra threatened legal action against TTFI, alleging the federation violated its constitution during selection after initially naming her only as a reserve for the Asian Games. She later backed down, citing mental exhaustion. Earlier this year, TTFI suspended secretary general Kamlesh Mehta over alleged financial irregularities, a decision that the Delhi High Court later set aside.
Despite the overarching administrative turmoil, domestic events continue. The first zonal National Ranking Table Tennis Tournament remains scheduled in Kanpur from August 16 to 23, with initial days reserved for junior age-group competitions. TTFI sources confirmed to Sportstar that the Kanpur tournament will proceed as planned, offering immediate operational clarity for young players and parents navigating the broader sporting disruption.
