Mutimurefu Prison Escapee Recaptured After Shoot-out in Masvingo

August 16, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

James Masunda, a 34-year-old convict who escaped from Mutimurefu Prison on August 8, 2026, was arrested on August 14 following a shoot-out with law enforcement at Matsa Village in the Renco area of Masvingo, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The confrontation ended a six-day manhunt for the dangerous fugitive, though a second escapee remains at large.

The Renco Shoot-Out and Arrest Details

The high-stakes apprehension unfolded on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Matsa Village, located within the Renco mining and rural district of Masvingo. ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that tactical teams confronted Masunda, culminating in an exchange of gunfire before officers successfully secured the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the full tactical breakdown of the shoot-out.

Masunda’s freedom lasted less than a week. He and fellow inmate Tafadzwa Janyure Zimirenyika, 27, broke out of Mutimurefu Prison on August 8, triggering a nationwide security alert. According to police investigations outlined by Nyathi, the pair embarked on a string of armed robberies immediately following their breakout. Investigators established that the fugitives targeted local communities to secure basic supplies, including clothing, food, and cash while evading capture.

Ongoing Manhunt for the Remaining Fugitive

While Masunda sits in police custody, law enforcement agencies have maintained a heightened operational tempo across the Masvingo Province to track down the second fugitive. Zimirenyika remains at large, and police have reiterated warnings that he should be considered dangerous. Before the Renco confrontation, authorities explicitly urged civilians to avoid engaging the escapees directly.

Police have renewed their appeal for public assistance. Anyone possessing actionable intelligence regarding Zimirenyika’s current whereabouts is encouraged to immediately notify local authorities or visit the nearest police station.

Security Implications for the Masvingo Region

Investigations into both the initial prison breach and the string of armed robberies attributed to the escapees remain active.
