Multi-Species Snake Antiserum Developed by Danish Researchers

Broad-Spectrum Antivenom Offers Hope Against Deadly African Snakebites

Kongens Lyngby,⁣ Denmark – A newly developed antiserum demonstrates effectiveness against multiple African snake species simultaneously, offering a potential breakthrough in treating snakebite envenomation, researchers from the⁤ Technical University⁢ of denmark and an international team have⁣ announced. The findings were ⁣published today‍ in the journal Nature (2025; DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-09661-0).

Snakebite envenomings represent ⁢a notable, yet often ⁤overlooked, global health crisis. The World Health Association ⁢(WHO) recognizes it as one of ⁣21 neglected tropical diseases, contributing to ⁤an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 deaths annually.⁣ Critically, three times that number⁢ – ‍hundreds of ⁤thousands of individuals – survive with‌ life-altering, permanent disabilities, including‌ amputations and extensive tissue ⁢damage.Current treatment relies on species-specific antivenoms, which‌ are ⁣often unavailable ⁤or⁣ impractical to administer in regions with diverse snake populations. This ⁣new broad-spectrum approach aims ‍to address that ‌critical⁢ gap.
