Mozilla to Discontinue Monitor Plus, Ending Partnership with Onerep
SAN FRANCISCO – Mozilla announced today it will discontinue its Monitor plus service by December 17, 2025, effectively ending its partnership with data privacy company Onerep. The decision follows over a year of scrutiny stemming from revelations that Onerep’s founder was also operating people-search and data-broker websites – a conflict of interest that raised concerns about Mozilla’s commitment to user privacy.
Monitor Plus offered subscribers scans of data broker sites and automated removal of personal data. Current subscribers will retain full access to the service through the wind-down period and will receive prorated refunds for any unused portion of their subscription after December 17, 2025.
“We explored several options to keep Monitor Plus going, but our high standards for vendors, and the realities of the data broker ecosystem made it challenging to consistently deliver the level of value and reliability we expect for our users,” Mozilla stated in a public advisory.
The move signals a renewed focus for Mozilla on privacy tools it directly controls. The company will continue to offer its free Monitor data breach service, integrated into Firefox‘s credential manager, and plans to integrate more privacy and security features - including its VPN – directly into the Firefox browser at no cost.
This decision marks a meaningful shift for mozilla, which initially partnered with Onerep to provide a more extensive data privacy solution for its users. Though, the controversy surrounding onerep’s founder ultimately proved insurmountable, leading to the termination of the relationship and a refocus on internally developed privacy offerings.
