## Moving Forward Counselling: Bridging Gaps in Mental Health Support
Moving Forward Counselling is a unique organization providing accessible mental health services, particularly in Surrey, British Columbia, and increasingly recognized across Canada and internationally. While publicly-funded systems struggle with capacity, Moving Forward is currently supporting thousands of individuals, often those unable to access timely care through conventional channels.
A key differentiator for moving Forward is its independence from government funding. This allows teh organization to operate as a true grassroots service, offering support to anyone seeking counselling without the restrictive criteria or lengthy wait times common in public systems. As Thandi, a representative of the organization, explains, ”TherS no wrong door.”
Moving Forward prioritizes early intervention and preventative care, aiming to support individuals *before* they reach crisis points – a contrast to systems frequently enough focused on responding to significant harm. This proactive approach is coupled with a holistic understanding of mental health, acknowledging its impact on families and communities.Unlike traditional, siloed programs addressing individual issues, Moving Forward offers an integrated, family-centred model. Counselling is available in over 30 languages, with flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends, and is complemented by individual psycho-educational support and group programs alongside one-on-one therapy.
Beyond general counselling, Moving Forward has launched specialized initiatives responding to identified community needs. These include the Veteran Wellness Program, funded by Veterans Affairs Canada, which supports veterans and their families in navigating trauma and reintegrating into civilian life. The LIFT Program, supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada, focuses on removing barriers for women of color pursuing leadership roles in small to medium-sized organizations. Additional psycho-educational support is offered on a one-to-one basis covering topics such as life skills, healthy relationships, mindfulness, parenting, substance use management, self-esteem, and support for seniors.Thandi emphasizes that these programs are driven by community input. “We don’t dictate how support should look – we listen, and then we build services around those needs.” The organization is committed to applying evidence-based practices, recognizing decades of research highlighting the importance of prevention, flexibility, cultural responsiveness, holistic care, integration with other services, and accessibility.
Acknowledging that no single agency can solve the mental health challenge alone, Moving Forward advocates for collaboration. “This work cuts across education, health and social services. We need like-minded organizations to collaborate rather than compete. That’s how we build a truly integrated system of care.”
Moving Forward Counselling demonstrates that innovative, collaborative, and accessible mental health care is achievable.
