EVANSTON, IL – Northwestern Women’s Basketball‘s dominant 90-62 victory over Georgia Tech in the frist round of the 1993 NCAA tournament has been recognized as one of the program’s most significant wins in history, according to a recent poll by InsideNU.
The game, played on March 19, 1993, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois, saw the Wildcats establish a commanding lead early and never look back. Northwestern shot an impressive 60% from the field, converting 34 of 57 attempts, while holding Georgia Tech to just 31% shooting (22 of 71). The Wildcats also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 27 of 37 attempts.
Senior Nancy Kennelly led the charge for northwestern,delivering a near triple-double performance with 11 assists,12 rebounds,and eight points. The Chicago Tribune highlighted Kennelly’s all-around contribution as pivotal to the Wildcats’ success. Other key contributors included forward Kourtney Walton, who scored 21 points, and guard Michele Van Gorp, who added 18.
The 28-point margin of victory remains the largest in Northwestern Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament history. The win propelled Northwestern to the second round, where they faced and ultimately lost to Iowa. Georgia Tech, coached by Nell fortner, finished the 1992-93 season with a 22-8 record.
