A motorcyclist attempting to evade a police check in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon, France, lost control of his vehicle after briefly accelerating toward an officer on Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, according to local reports.
The incident occurred around 6:45 PM on Route de Genas when a security patrol attempted to stop the rider of a motocross bike. Instead of complying, the individual accelerated directly toward a police officer who was on foot. The officer was able to avoid being struck, but the motorcyclist subsequently lost control and crashed, sustaining injuries, Le Progrès reported.
Authorities immediately apprehended the suspect and placed him in custody for questioning. The investigation is ongoing and no further details regarding the suspect’s identity or potential charges have been released.
This incident follows a separate, more serious refusal to comply with a police check in Villeurbanne earlier this month. On February 4th, a high-speed chase resulted in a collision that injured four people, including three police officers. That incident, which began around 4:30 AM on Rue Chanu in the Brosses district, involved a young driver who fled after being signaled to stop. The driver sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition, while the three officers sustained minor injuries. According to reports from LyonMag and BFM Lyon, the initial pursuit began after a woman reported a dispute with a man and began following him in her car, prompting police intervention.
The February 4th chase ended when the fleeing vehicle collided with a police car after the driver attempted to navigate an unsuitable passage, striking a wall and then the police vehicle. The driver was transported to the hospital in a state of shock with life-threatening injuries. The officers involved suffered contusions.
Both incidents underscore the risks associated with refusals to comply with police authority in the Lyon metropolitan area. Investigations into both events are continuing, with authorities seeking to determine the full circumstances surrounding each case.
