Violent Protests Erupt in Morocco, Injuring Hundreds of Police Officers
Rabat, Morocco - hundreds of police officers have been injured in clashes with protesters across multiple Moroccan cities, local media reported Tuesday, as demonstrations led by the grassroots “Gen Z 212” movement escalate. The unrest stems from widespread discontent over economic conditions, particularly limited job opportunities and inadequate social services, alongside grievances regarding the state of healthcare and education.
The leaderless Gen Z 212 movement has gained momentum by voicing frustration with government spending priorities, sparking demonstrations that, while initially peaceful, have devolved into violence. Organizers, communicating via Discord, have emphasized demands for “the right to health, education and a dignified life,” framing these as “not an empty slogan but a serious demand.” Despite calls from the movement’s organizers for peaceful demonstration-and an appeal to King Mohammed VI- clashes with security forces have resulted in numerous injuries among law enforcement.
The protests are particularly concentrated in areas experiencing economic hardship. Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch is scheduled to convene a meeting on Thursday to discuss potential reforms to the contry’s health services. Government officials have refuted claims of prioritizing spending on the recent World Cup over essential services.
The ongoing situation underscores growing social and economic pressures within Morocco, raising concerns about potential further unrest. The Gen Z 212 movement’s emergence highlights a new generation’s willingness to challenge the status quo and demand greater accountability from the government.
