Morocco Advances Green Hydrogen Strategy with Key Project Approvals
Rabat – Morocco is solidifying its position as a leading global player in green hydrogen with significant progress announced following a meeting of the Steering Committee for the Morocco of Green Hydrogen, chaired by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch on Wednesday, September 17th. The developments align with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to establish the Kingdom as a key energy hub.
The committee confirmed the triumphant completion of the preliminary phase of the “Chbika 1″ project, a venture led by a consortium of French and Danish investors. This achievement paves the way for in-depth studies and the eventual realization of the project.
Furthermore, the committee approved preliminary land booking contracts for five national and foreign investors, chosen during a selection process on March 6th, 2025. These investors will develop six large-scale projects in Morocco’s southern regions, representing a total investment of 319 billion dirhams.
Prime Minister akhannouch lauded the “positive momentum” of these initiatives, emphasizing the King’s strong commitment to the green hydrogen sector. He highlighted that the influx of investment demonstrates confidence in Morocco and reinforces its status as a regional and international energy leader.
Akhannouch stressed the importance of coordinated planning for essential infrastructure – including electricity, ports, and desalination facilities - to ensure projects remain on schedule. He also underscored the commitment to transparency, balanced partnerships, and responsible management of public land.
Morocco remains open to further investment, leveraging its strategic location, diverse natural resources, and internationally-aligned infrastructure to attract new partners and continue building its green hydrogen capacity.
