The results of the inquiry into the living and income conditions of INE, released this Thursday, July 10, reveal that 25.9% of people at risk of poverty were overload of housing expenses. Problem worsened in 2024, according to the data.
More than a quarter of the population at risk of poverty (25.9%) was in overload of housing expenses in 2024, according to the results of the inquiry into living and income of the National Statistics Institute (INE), released this Thursday, July 10.
“There was an aggravation in the financial conditions associated with housing compared to 2023, either in terms of the median burden of housing expenses, which increased to 12.0%, both as regards the overload rate of housing expenses, which rose to 6.9%,” the INE.
On the other hand, the indicators mark an improvement in the physical housing conditions in 2024, with the housing overlapping rate to decrease to 11.2% and the severe deprivation rate of housing conditions to decrease to 4.9%.
The autonomous regions had more unfavorable physical housing conditions while the regions of the Center and West and Tagus Valley were the most performing regions.
The data of the IA regarding 2024 confirm that the housing conditions, especially physical, but also
financial, household aggregates with dependent children are more unfavorable than those
for the other families.
According to INE, in 2024, about 15.7% of the population lived in aggregates without financial capacity to maintain properly warm accommodation, which corresponds to a lower proportion than observed in 2023 (20.8%). The average of the European Union-27 was 9.2%.
“In Portugal, the percentage of the population at risk of poverty without financial capacity to maintain the home
Properly heated (30.9%) represented significantly twice the general population (15.7%). THE
financial disability to keep the house properly heated affected more than one fifth of the elderly
(22%) ”, stresses the INE.
The situation still gets worse if those who were in precarious thermal situation for financial reasons join the 20.4% who say they live in a situation where accommodation is not hot enough in winter for other reasons.
Additionally, 29.9% of the population lives in accommodation that are not properly fresh in summer.
