Montreal Cycling Grand Prix Disrupted by Pro-Palestinian Protests,Two Arrests Made
Montreal – Pro-Palestinian demonstrations unfolded at the Montreal Cycling Grand Prix on Sunday, resulting in two arrests, according to reports. The protests are part of a wave of activism targeting cycling events featuring the Israel-PremierTech (IPT) team, spurred by concerns over Israeli policies and the use of sports for political branding.
The demonstrations in Montreal followed similar actions at the Tour of Spain, where the final stage in Madrid was interrupted by protestors invading the course. Earlier in the week, pro-Palestinian demonstrators were also present at the Quebec Cycling Grand Prix, peacefully voicing their concerns during team presentations. The IPT team recently removed the mention of “Israel” from their jerseys in response to ongoing protests,a move that has not quelled demonstrations.
Quebec solidarity deputy Haroun Bouazzi voiced support for the protestors, stating in a written statement: “I share the anger of Quebecers in the face of a billionaire who supports the crimes committed by the State of Israel, who does not hide the use of sport to improve the image of Israeli policies and who,in addition, receives the support of the organizers in his project. The sporting spirit, cycling and Quebec deserve better.”
The sustained mobilization of pro-Palestinian activists reflects growing international scrutiny of Israel’s involvement in sporting events and its broader political landscape.
