The Library of Alexandria paid a vibrant tribute to the Moroccan diplomat and intellectual, the late Mohamed Benaïssa, on Thursday, July 17. Benaïssa was the personality in the spotlight of the 20th edition of the International Book Fair, organized from July 7 to 21 in the Egyptian city.
Placed under the theme “Mohamed Benaïssa: A Journey of Generosity and Cultural Creativity,” the ceremony took place in the presence of the Ambassador of Morocco to Egypt, Mohamed Aït ouali, as well as manny personalities from the diplomatic and cultural world.
A Living Legacy and an Emblematic Cultural Project
The director of the library, Ahmed Zayed, praised the memory of a man who marked the arab intellectual space with his action and vision. As Minister of Culture and then Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Benaïssa managed to combine pioneering political and cultural initiatives, notably through the Culturel D’Asilah Festival, of which he was the initiator.
“Despite his disappearance, his heritage remains alive through his achievements, and Asilah remains a unique model in the Arab world,” said Zayed, evoking this city transformed into an international crossroads of thought and creation.

The writer and journalist Ahmed al-moslan, President of the National Media Authority, praised “Mohamed Benaïssa’s ability to register Asilah on the international cultural map,” comparing it to places like Cannes or Davos, despite modest means. He also recalled the richness of his career: studies at Washington, a return to the country, a parliamentary and ministerial career, and international renown, all carried by a humility.
A Deep Link With Egypt
For the Ambassador of Morocco to Egypt, Mohamed Aït Ouali, this tribute testifies to a reciprocal attachment. “Mohamed Benaïssa was deeply linked to egypt,where he continued his secondary and university studies. It is here that a large part of his cultural and intellectual conscience has been forged,” he said.
A Book in the Book in Arabic Colors
This 20th edition of the Book Fair of the Alexandria Library brings together 79 Egyptian and Arab publishing houses and proposes more than 200 cultural events, including conferences, poetic evenings, and workshops. Next to 800 thinkers, intellectuals, researchers, and experts take part in this celebration of knowledge and cultural diversity, in which the memory of Mohamed benaïssa finds all its resonance.
