Volunteers across New York City gathered in Queens Sunday to feed people in need, honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of Monday’s national day of service.
Joseph Ruiz and his wife visit the food pantry each week for donations. “Very appreciative, I love this place,” he told NBC New York. Ruiz also collects food for his mother, explaining his two jobs aren’t enough. “My mom can’t pick up anymore, she’s disabled… this is survival food right now. it’s good they do this for the community, for people to have food.”

“Dr.King understood that true freedom requires economic justice,” said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.“That’s why we’re here today, fighting hunger and honoring his legacy.”
Organizers reported serving over 500 families during the event. They emphasized the ongoing need for support and encouraged continued volunteerism and donations to local food pantries.
