Missouri falls to Ole Miss 31-3 in Oxford, Mississippi
Missouri fell to Ole Miss 31-3 on Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi, as the Tigers struggled to overcome an early deficit and repeated failures in the red zone. The loss drops Missouri to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference, marking the fourth time this season the team trailed after the first quarter.
Missed opportunities in the red zone
The Tigers’ offensive struggles were defined by an inability to capitalize on scoring chances. Missouri entered the red zone three times but managed only a single field goal. In the first quarter, a touchdown pass attempt from quarterback Austin Simmons to Naeshaun Montgomery slipped through the receiver’s fingers, forcing the team to settle for three points. Later in the half, a missed 23-yard field goal attempt by Blake Craig kept the score at 14-3, a moment head coach Eli Drinkwitz described as deflating for the team.
The Rebels capitalized on these lapses, stringing together an 80-yard touchdown drive late in the second quarter to extend their lead. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss anchored the Rebels’ offense, finishing the first half with 161 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Everybody was off today and I didn’t see it coming. There was a third down on a throw to Naeshaun in the red zone that was kind of close. We had a couple of deep balls that were just kind of close, but weren’t there for whatever reason. That’s on me to figure out those inches that we need in order to be successful. So, go back to the drawing board. — Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri Head Coach
Missouri defense fails to spark offense
Despite the deficit, Missouri’s defense provided a window for a potential comeback in the third quarter. The unit forced three punts, yet the offense failed to generate points, even after securing a takeaway that provided a short field. The Tigers finished the third quarter with four scoreless drives.

Austin Simmons attempted to stretch the field throughout the game, finishing 25-for-44 with 339 passing yards and an interception. However, the ground game struggled to maintain consistency. Running back Jamal Roberts, who had exceeded 200 rushing yards in each of his previous two appearances, was held to 39 yards on 20 carries. Conversely, the Ole Miss backfield duo of Kewan Lacy and Makhi Frazier combined for 223 yards on 31 carries, controlling the tempo for the Rebels.
Looking ahead to the Arkansas matchup
Missouri now enters a bye week, providing time for the coaching staff to address the team’s recurring slow starts. The schedule resumes on October 31 with a road game against Arkansas.
