Leland, MS – A wave of gun violence swept across Mississippi this weekend, leaving six people dead and approximately 20 injured in two separate shooting incidents. The shootings occurred in the small towns of Leland and Heidelberg, both following high school football games.
The most devastating incident unfolded in Leland, located in the Washington district of Mississippi. State Senator Derrick Simmons reported on Saturday that four people were killed in the center of leland after a football match at Leland High School. Around 20 individuals sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire, with four critically injured individuals transported to a hospital in Jackson, the state capital.
Leland,a community of fewer than 4,000 residents,is now grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that no suspects have been apprehended as of this writing, and a thorough investigation is currently underway.
Simultaneously, police in Heidelberg, a smaller town in eastern Mississippi, are investigating a shooting that claimed the lives of two people. According to Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White, the victims were killed at the school on friday night, also following a football game.

He stated on Saturday morning, “Right now we still have a person on the loose, but I can’t give more details.” Heidelberg has a population of approximately 640 and is situated roughly 137 kilometers southeast of Jackson.
