Minnesota defeats Michigan 20-14 to claim Little Brown Jug
“We would drink out of that Little Brown Jug a lot,” Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck shared on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff pregame show before his team took the field on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026. The Minnesota Gophers secured a 20-14 victory over the Michigan Wolverines at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, capturing the historic rivalry trophy at home for the first time in 49 years.
Defensive Dominance Overcomes First-Half Turnovers
The 100th meeting for the Little Brown Jug featured a stark contrast between halves. In the first half, Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey threw two costly interceptions that aided Michigan. Another interception set up a touchdown run by Jordan Marshall. The Gophers trailed 14-17 at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to the Minnesota defense. The unit shut down the Michigan offense completely, allowing just two plays and forcing two turnovers over the entire third quarter. Ayden West recorded an interception, and the Gophers recovered a muffed punt by Andrew Marsh that led to a field goal. In the fourth quarter, Jaxon Howard hit Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood as he threw, allowing Zach Harden to intercept the pass. Underwood finished the game 10 for 21 for 101 yards and rushed 10 times for 20 yards.
Fourth-Quarter Touchdown Secures Historic Rivalry Win
Capitalizing on the defensive takeaway, the Gopher offense capitalized early in the fourth quarter. Noah Jennings took a receiver handoff 31 yards, setting up first and goal at the four-yard line. Two plays later, Lindsey connected with Darius Taylor for a three-yard touchdown pass to take a 20-14 lead. Taylor finished the afternoon with 64 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
The Minnesota defense preserved the lead down the stretch, adding two sacks and containing Underwood on late possessions. When Michigan took over with 37 seconds remaining, Underwood threw fourth-and-5 from midfield out of bounds, sealing the outcome. The Gophers then ran out the clock and sprinted to lift the Little Brown Jug.

Historical Context of the Long-Awaited Victory
As Pioneer Press noted, the victory marked Minnesota’s first home win in the series since October 22, 1977, when Minnesota lost 16-0 at Memorial Stadium as the top-ranked team in the Associated Press poll. It also snapped a five-game overall losing skid to the Wolverines, dating back to a 2014 win in Ann Arbor under Jerry Kill. With the win, Minnesota improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten, while Michigan dropped to 3-2 and 0-2 in conference play.
Minnesota travels to face Purdue on Oct. 10, while Michigan enters a bye week before hosting Penn State on Oct. 17.
