The Irish government’s planned relocation of Ukrainian refugees from Co Kerry to make way for asylum seekers has been temporarily halted by Education Minister Norma Foley. This decision followed appeals from local representatives and businesses in Cahersiveen, where around 200 Ukrainian refugees live at the Skellig Accommodation Centre. While the Department of Integration claimed that there was a “severe” shortage of accommodation for international protection applicants, 40 Ukrainian residents were due to be moved to Tralee, including about 10 children who attend local schools. However, following direct appeals to Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman and Foley from employers, local councillors, and the community, Foley placed a “pause” on the relocation until further discussion. There are concerns that the planned move may disrupt integration efforts and undermine the good work that has been done so far.
