Argentine President Milei Urges UN too Secure Release of Detained Gendarme
UNITED NATIONS, September 24, 2025 – Argentine President Javier Milei used his address to the United Nations General assembly today to demand the immediate release of Nahuel Gallo, a member of the National Gendarmerie arrested in Venezuela on December 8, 2024.
Milei denounced Gallo’s detention as a “forced disappearance” and appealed to the international community, stating, “we demand from the Government of venezuela its immediate release and call the international community to accompany this legitimate claim in defence of the moast basic principles of international law and human dignity.”
Gallo was arrested by Venezuelan authorities while crossing the Francisco de Paula Santander international bridge from Colombia, intending to meet his partner and two-year-old son. The Argentine government maintains Gallo entered Venezuela legally with proper documentation but has been held without formal charges, access to legal counsel, or consular assistance.
Venezuelan authorities accuse gallo of alleged espionage and terrorism activities, but have yet to present public evidence or disclose his location.
The case has drawn concern from international organizations including the UN and the Institution of American States (OAS), which have characterized Gallo’s detention as arbitrary and possibly a crime against humanity. Argentina has escalated diplomatic efforts to secure his release, amid a strained bilateral relationship with Venezuela sence August 2024.
