Microsoft Windows Updates: Faster Performance & Copilot Changes

March 21, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft has begun rolling back some of its more aggressive integrations of artificial intelligence into Windows 11, responding to user criticism and concerns about performance. The company announced it will no longer automatically install the Copilot AI assistant on new machines and is focusing on improving the overall speed and responsiveness of the operating system.

The shift comes after a period of pushing Copilot as a central feature of Windows 11, aiming to leverage AI to enhance user productivity. However, reports of sluggish performance and unwanted interruptions prompted a reassessment of the rollout strategy. Microsoft’s initial approach involved a prominent presence for Copilot, often appearing as a sidebar and consuming system resources. Users voiced frustration with forced updates and the AI’s sometimes intrusive behavior.

“We are listening to our customers and are committed to delivering the best possible experience with Windows,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated, according to reports from Czech technology news site CDR.cz. The company is prioritizing stability and speed, acknowledging that a less intrusive AI experience may be preferable for many users.

This adjustment coincides with a broader effort by Microsoft to position AI as a tool for enterprise customers. Copilot Cowork, a version of the AI assistant tailored for businesses, is being marketed as a way to boost employee efficiency. Microsoft is attempting to demonstrate the commercial value of its AI investments, focusing on practical applications within corporate environments, as reported by Živě.cz.

The move also reflects a changing narrative around AI integration. While Microsoft initially emphasized the transformative potential of AI to fundamentally alter the user interface, the company now appears to be adopting a more cautious approach. The focus is shifting towards allowing users to opt-in to AI features rather than having them imposed automatically. This strategy aligns with concerns raised about data privacy and the potential for AI to disrupt established workflows.

Microsoft’s Copilot Health, a new AI-powered tool integrating with Apple Health, Fitbit, and over 50,000 Electronic Health Records (EHRs), represents a different facet of the company’s AI strategy. This initiative, highlighted by HIT Consultant and eWeek, demonstrates Microsoft’s ambition to apply AI to specialized domains like healthcare, where data integration and analysis can offer significant benefits. The Copilot Health platform aims to provide users with personalized health insights and support.

Despite the pullback on automatic Copilot installation, Microsoft continues to invest heavily in AI development. The company’s Copilot Vision, showcased in PCMag, is being touted as a superior AI offering compared to those from Apple and Google. However, Windows Central reports that Microsoft Copilot is unlikely to achieve the same level of dominance on mobile platforms as Google’s AI offerings.

Looking ahead, Microsoft is outlining a vision for “Windows 2030,” described by Chip.cz as a future where the operating system anticipates user needs and operates with minimal intervention. This long-term strategy suggests that AI will continue to play a central role in the evolution of Windows, but the path towards that future may be more gradual and user-centric than initially anticipated.
