Microsoft Teams: Voice Isolation – AI Noise Cancellation Guide

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Microsoft Teams users can now significantly reduce background noise during calls and meetings with the introduction of Voice Isolation, an artificial intelligence-powered feature designed to focus audio on the speaker’s voice. The capability, which began rolling out to users in early 2026, aims to address the challenges of increasingly remote and flexible perform environments where ambient sounds can disrupt communication.

Voice Isolation utilizes AI algorithms to distinguish between a user’s voice and surrounding noises, effectively filtering out distractions like barking dogs, sirens, or office chatter. Unlike traditional noise suppression technologies that can sometimes muffle speech, Microsoft’s system is designed to recognize and preserve the clarity of the speaker’s voice while eliminating unwanted sounds. According to Microsoft, the feature is particularly effective even when multiple people are nearby or consistent background noise is present.

To activate Voice Isolation, users must first create a voice profile within Teams settings. This process, which takes approximately 30 seconds, involves selecting a microphone and reading provided text, allowing the AI to learn the unique characteristics of the user’s voice. Once a profile is established, Voice Isolation automatically functions during Teams calls and meetings. Users can disable the feature on a per-meeting basis through the microphone settings, selecting an option to turn off voice isolation if they wish to include ambient sounds or other nearby speakers.

The system provides visual indicators to users during meetings, confirming when Voice Isolation is active and functioning. These indicators display whether the feature is engaged, if the user’s microphone was initially muted, or if unwanted audio is being detected and filtered. A specific indicator alerts users when someone else nearby is detected, offering the option to disable Voice Isolation to include that person’s audio.

The introduction of Voice Isolation builds on Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Teams platform with AI-driven features. The company highlighted the importance of clear communication for productivity and collaboration, particularly in distributed teams. While the feature is generally available, some users may need to contact their IT administrators if the “Recognition” setting is not visible within their Teams settings.
