Microsoft Explores Alternatives to OpenAI for Copilot in office 365
Microsoft is considering a shift in its AI strategy for its Office 365 suite, perhaps moving away from reliance on OpenAI’s technology. According to a report by The Information, the company is planning to integrate Anthropic‘s Claude models to power the copilot functions within Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with an proclamation expected in the coming weeks.
This move is notable given Microsoft’s significant investment in OpenAI,being its largest stakeholder since the launch of ChatGPT,and its instrumental role in reinstating Sam Altman as CEO following his brief removal. Recent reports have indicated increasing friction between the two companies regarding OpenAI’s proposed transition to a public benefit company structure.
While Microsoft has publicly downplayed any connection between these tensions and the potential shift, a company spokesperson told The Information that “OpenAI remains our partner and we are still committed to our long-term partnership.”
The report suggests that Microsoft is evaluating Anthropic’s models due to their perceived efficiency. Specifically, the Claude models are reported to perform well in tasks like generating visually appealing PowerPoint presentations, even utilizing earlier versions of the technology.
Importantly,Microsoft has stated that any change in AI providers will not result in increased pricing for users of Copilot-enabled features within Office 365.
