Michelle Randolph: From Westerns to Scream 7 & Beyond | Cultured Magazine

Michelle Randolph is poised to showcase a new dimension of her talent, transitioning from the sweeping landscapes of Taylor Sheridan’s Western dramas to the chilling world of horror. The 28-year-old actress, who gained prominence in Sheridan’s series including 1923 and Landman, will appear in Scream 7, scheduled for release on February 27th.

Randolph’s rise has been rapid, propelled by her roles as strong-willed women in Sheridan’s productions. In 1923, she portrayed Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, while in Landman, which recently concluded its second season and became the most viewed series in the history of Paramount+, she embodies Ainsley Norris, the daughter of corporate fixer Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore. The success of Landman, according to Paramount+, has been substantial, drawing a large audience to the oil and gas industry-based drama.

Randolph’s connection to Sheridan’s work extends beyond simply appearing in multiple projects. She credits the creator with providing her with opportunities to avoid being typecast. “I’m so lucky because … I feel like it would be a lot easier for me to get typecast,” Randolph shared with Yahoo! Entertainment, as reported by Whiskeyriff. “That happens.” She expressed gratitude for the vastly different roles in Landman and 1923, which allowed her to demonstrate her range as an actress.

The actress acknowledges the complexities of portraying characters like Ainsley, who has drawn both criticism and praise. In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, Randolph discussed navigating the “feminist negativity” surrounding her roles in Sheridan’s shows. She explained that she approaches her characters without judgment, recognizing their vulnerabilities and motivations. “For Ainsley, I couldn’t be more different than her, but I also adore her. I like to say she’s not dumb, she just has limited life experience and we’re seeing her in her most formative years,” she said.

Randolph’s willingness to tackle challenging roles extends to her upcoming appearance in Scream 7. She described joining the franchise as an honor, acknowledging its dedicated fan base and the work of director Kevin Williamson. The transition from serialized television to a film franchise, she explained, involves a different rhythm. “With television… you’re deeply prepared from the start, but you also know you’ll have time to evolve,” she said. “With film, everything feels more concentrated.”

Randolph’s own journey to acting wasn’t without its connection to the public eye; her sister, Cassie Randolph, won Season 23 of The Bachelor while Michelle was still in college, as noted by People magazine. However, Randolph’s focus remains firmly on her craft, and she approaches each role with a dedication to understanding the character’s perspective. She also revealed a fondness for horror films, recalling a horror elective she took in college where she analyzed classics like The Exorcist and The Shining.

Randolph emphasized the trust she has built with Taylor Sheridan over four years of collaboration. “You build a level of trust,” she said. “I feel braver when I am less focused on proving myself. When I feel trusted, I am much more willing to accept risks or be bold in moments that feel uncomfortable.”
