Michael Penix Jr. Cleared for Full Team Work Ahead of Falcons Season
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has been officially cleared for full-team work and contact, marking a major milestone in his recovery from a November 2025 ACL surgery, according to official team reports from Atlanta Falcons. The clearance brings a fully healthy quarterback room to training camp as the team prepares for the upcoming season under new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
The Road to Full Clearance for Penix
Penix spent the months following his Week 11 knee injury in 2025 navigating a rigorous rehabilitation protocol. After starting the first nine games of his 2025 season and leading the team to a 3-6 record while completing 60.1% of his passes for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions, the former No. 8-overall pick was forced to watch from the sidelines. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, his participation remained strictly limited.

“As far as a pocket, I can do everything,” Penix said in a statement published by Atlanta Falcons. “If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I can get away. But it’s just, right now, if I don’t get away, that’s what we think about. If I don’t get away, I don’t think my doctor is ready for me to take those hits right now, but that time is coming real soon.”
That timeline has now arrived. The medical green light means Penix will finally experience live-action approximations in 11-on-11 drills, allowing him to absorb high-speed defensive pressure for the first time since last November.
Mental Preparation Under a New Offensive Scheme
While physical limitations kept him out of full contact during early camp practices, Penix maintained an active mental presence. He shadowed coordinators, tracked every play call during team periods, and executed mental simulations of pocket reads and audibles.
The transition to a new playbook under Tommy Rees demands sharp cognitive alignment.
“Everything in this game is reps,” Penix noted via Atlanta Falcons. “So, the more you study, the more you look at the script, the more you look at the playbook, the more familiar you get with it. Each and every day, I’m just studying my [expletive] off and trying to get better every day by understanding the play calls.”
Impact on the Atlanta Roster and Depth Chart
The return of a fully active Penix creates a competitive, healthy quarterback room in Atlanta.
The convergence of medical clearance and tactical integration sets the stage for a critical evaluation period.
The mental reps are finished. The live bullets are real. How Penix translates his exhaustive playbook study into game-day execution will define the trajectory of Atlanta’s offense.
