Mexico’s Auto Market Faces Ongoing Sales Slump
New car sales in Mexico continue to decline, dropping 5.9% this past June. It marks the third consecutive month of decreased sales, signaling potential challenges for the automotive industry.
Automotive Sales Dip
According to data from Inegi, a total of 116,000 units were purchased by consumers and businesses during June. That is a decrease of 7,332 light vehicles compared to the figures from the previous year.
While Chinese brands Chirey and Omoda stopping their data reporting impacted figures, other underlying factors contribute to this negative trend. In fact, global car sales are expected to decrease slightly in 2025 due to economic uncertainty (Statista).
Expert Analysis
Guillermo Rosales Zárate, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), stated the June result fell short of his organization’s projection of 119,033 units. The difference represents a 2.6% discrepancy.
“The economic and financial factors affecting vehicle demand have not seen any substantial positive changes.”
—Guillermo Rosales Zárate, Executive President of AMDA
The AMDA leader also explained that Mexico’s economic activity remains weak, resulting in continuous downward revisions of the country’s GDP growth forecast for 2025, which is contributing to the market slowdown.
According to Rosales, this recent data underscores his belief that a sustained recovery within the domestic market has yet to materialize.
