Woman Sentenced for Role in Deaths of Three Surfers in Baja California
A 23-year-old Mexican woman, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the robbery that led to the deaths of two Australian brothers and their American friend while on a surfing trip in Baja California, Mexico.
Raya pleaded guilty to robbery and vehicle theft with violence, admitting she encouraged her boyfriend and two other men to rob Callum Robinson, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, of Australia, and Jack Rhoad, 30, of the United States. The three surfers were found dead in a well following an extensive search.
The incident occurred near Punta San Jose, approximately 20 miles south of Ensenada, in April 2024. Investigators determined Raya befriended the men on the night of April 27th and observed their valuables. Between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. the following night, three thieves arrived at their location and carried out the robbery, ultimately leading to the menS deaths.
The families of the victims reported them missing after thay failed to check into their Airbnb in Rosarito Beach. A large-scale search involving Mexican authorities, the Mexican Marines, and the FBI was launched. the bodies were discovered on May 2nd, each having suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
In addition to the 20-year sentence, Raya was ordered to pay 54,000 pesos (approximately $3,000 USD) in restitution. Prosecutors have indicated that further penalties may be applied as the case progresses.
Three other suspects – identified as Jesus “the kekas” Gerardo, Irineus Francisco, and Angel Jesus – remain in custody awaiting trial in connection with the robberies and murders.
