Metro 4 Leaks Reveal Cancelled Open World Version
A massive 120 GB leak has revealed a canceled version of Metro 4, a project developed by 4A Games that was shelved in 2022. The materials, which first surfaced on Reddit, consist of more than 20 zipped files containing character models, dialogue and maps.
The leaked build depicts a narrative centered on the character Hunter, spanning a timeline from January 2033 to December 2034. According to the leaked content, the story followed the path of the book Metro 2034, effectively removing Artyom as a playable character and retiring him to the background of the universe. Khan and Bourbon were too designated as main characters in this version of the game.
Gameplay in the canceled build was designed as a full-fledged open world, encompassing both the metro tunnels and the surface “overworld.” This version introduced a barter-based economy, replacing the series’ traditional bullet-based system. It also featured an upgradeable NBC protection suit and a comprehensive crafting system with alternative ammunition types.
The build included a rumor system within various stations, allowing players to verify or debunk local stories. These rumors included claims that alcohol could numb radiation and that female characters wearing NBC suits shot faster than males. The open-world structure also allowed for the discovery of multiple factions and stations, including Nazi and Red stations.
4A Games reportedly began development of this open-world concept in 2020. However, the project was rebooted in 2022, and the fully open-world structure was scrapped. Insiders indicate that the current version of the game will retain large open locations but will abandon the total open-world design found in the leaked 2022 build.
Reports indicate an announcement for the fresh Metro title is expected as early as April 16 during a PlayStation State of Play presentation.
