Meta Unveils AI-Powered Ray-Ban Display Lenses, Betting Big on a Post-Smartphone Future
MENLO PARK, CA - September 18, 2025 – Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today unveiled the Ray-Ban Meta Display, a new generation of smart glasses featuring integrated displays and advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The lenses, priced at $799,aim too deliver a hands-free,immersive experience, displaying messages, photos, and more directly in the userS field of vision.
The Ray-Ban Meta Display boasts cutting-edge control mechanisms, utilizing bracelets equipped with “neuronal bands” – sensors that respond to subtle finger movements, allowing for intuitive operation of the lenses.Zuckerberg articulated Meta’s aspiring vision for the technology, stating, “Our goal is to create attractive lenses that offer personal superintelligence and a sense of presence using realistic holograms.” He further defined this vision as “metavers,” emphasizing the interconnectedness of these technologies.
Zuckerberg predicts these AI-powered lenses will ultimately supersede the smartphone as the primary personal computing device. This launch represents a meaningful escalation in Meta’s four-year investment in virtual and augmented reality, a strategic shift formally acknowledged in late 2021 with the company’s rebranding from Facebook.
However, the path to this future isn’t without financial hurdles. Meta’s Reality Labs, the division responsible for virtual and augmented reality growth, reported a loss of $4.5 billion in the second quarter of this year.
Industry analyst Leo Gebbie of CCS Insight views this as a long-term strategic play. “This is a long-term bet to free himself from smartphones,” Gebbie explained, “where he has lost ground with rivals such as Apple and Google.” The Ray-Ban Meta Display represents a bold step in Meta’s effort to redefine personal technology and establish a leadership position in the emerging metaverse landscape.
