Memphis Depay: Dutch Top Scorer Title Not Stolen – Wim Kieft

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Memphis Depay‘s Record-Breaking Title Earned, ⁢Not Given

Wim Kieft, in a recent column for De Telegraaf, argues that Memphis Depay deserves full recognition for becoming ⁣the all-time leading scorer for the Dutch national team, Oranje. Depay⁣ surpassed Robin van Persie’s previous record⁢ on Sunday, reaching 52 international goals.

Kieft emphasizes the significance of this achievement. “It’s a truly top performance,a ample number of goals,” he wrote. He countered criticisms suggesting Depay’s record is somehow less valid, stating that the accomplishment should be celebrated regardless of comparisons to other players. “He’ll be the first to‍ admit he isn’t the best of all time, but he is the striker ⁢with the most goals for Oranje.”

Addressing claims that Depay’s goals came against weaker opposition, Kieft pointed out the increased number of international matches ⁣played in the modern era,⁣ noting the ⁤goal-scoring rate is comparable to that of Van Persie. He firmly stated that Depay ”certainly did not steal” his top scorer ⁢title.

Kieft then drew a comparison to Marco van Basten, acknowledging Van Basten’s undisputed status as a legendary striker. He highlighted a key difference: Van Basten, like Depay, never secured a⁣ major international trophy with the national team or at the club level. Kieft noted Johan Cruijff is often considered above even Van Basten, but characterized Cruijff as ⁤a more complete, all-around footballer.

Kieft also acknowledged the importance of team quality in achieving success, arguing that Depay hasn’t benefited from the same‌ level of supporting players as Van Basten did during the 1988 European Championship. He concluded by stating that regardless of the Dutch national team’s performance at the upcoming world Cup, questioning Depay’s achievement and current standing is unwarranted, especially given his fitness⁢ concerns heading into the tournament.
