Meloni Responds to Schlein Regarding Global Sumud Flotilla, Pledges Protection for Italian Citizens
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has responded to a letter from Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein concerning the safety of participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla, particularly Italian citizens. Schlein had inquired about the government’s plans to ensure the security of those involved in the humanitarian mission.
Meloni stated that utilizing “already active humanitarian channels” for support to Gaza would have been preferable, as it would “avoid exposing the participants…to the risks deriving from going to a crisis area and the consequent burden on the various state authorities involved to guarantee protection and security.” She also noted the expedition’s departure from Barcelona “may also have purposes of a symbolic or political nature.”
Despite expressing these concerns,Meloni assured that the Italian government will deploy all available resources to protect its citizens abroad. “All the protection and safety measures of compatriots abroad will be adopted in similar situations, as always guaranteed so far,” she wrote.
Schlein’s letter highlighted the scale of the mission, noting the participation of 44 delegations from around the world, comprising thousands of activists, including numerous Italian citizens and four Italian parliamentarians. Specifically, she referenced the involvement of Democratic Party deputy Arturo Scotto and Eurodeputate Annalisa corrado. the letter emphasized the mission’s peaceful and lawful nature, operating in compliance with international law.
