Melania Trump brokered truce for Oleshky humanitarian evacuation
A convoy of 25 buses and ambulances rolled into the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky on Friday, evacuating starving and exhausted residents under a localized ceasefire that marks a rare point of co-operation in four years and eight months of war.
A Truncated Truce on the Kherson Front
The relief operation follows a truce brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and supported by Pope Leo XIV. It creates a pause in fighting along the southern Kherson region front line that began on Oct. 27 and is scheduled to hold through Sunday.
Access routes to Oleshky had been heavily mined and littered with debris following years of heavy fighting and the 2023 collapse of the upstream Nova Kakhovka dam. Demining operations completed late Thursday claimed the lives of two people, according to officials.

An Arduous Evacuation Route
Residents choosing to leave were initially transported in the convoy, and the humanitarian convoy assembled in Armiansk, a town in Russian-occupied Crimea about 85 kilometers (55 miles) south of Oleshky, according to Dmytro Lubinets.
Davyd Arakhamia, a lawmaker with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party, explained that evacuees heading for Ukrainian-controlled territory must travel to Anapa in southern Russia, fly to Belarus, and cross by bus into northern Ukraine.

Ukrainian public television and local reports noted that people had been stranded in the heavily destroyed city with severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, with some surviving on minimal rations of rice or buckwheat.
Humanitarian Coordination Amid Propaganda
Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and Lantratova appeared side by side in Oleshky to coordinate the distribution of humanitarian aid, including food, medical supplies, fuel, and hygiene products.

While Russian state television broadcast footage of aid boxes bearing Russian flags and slogans associated with “Putin’s Team — The People’s Front,” Ukrainian delegations worked on the ground to assist residents fearing detention or interrogation. Volunteers and officials noted that while some evacuees chose to travel toward Russia, an uncertain number remained behind in the devastated town.
Isolated Ceasefire as Wider War Rages
Despite the localized humanitarian agreement, heavy fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine.

A spokesperson replied that while coordination between human rights commissioners was high, the truce in Oleshky remained an isolated situation that was “difficult to extrapolate to the entire settlement process at this stage.”
