Leaders present framework to diversify Coastal Mississippi economy
Coastal Mississippi business and community leaders presented the Coastal Mississippi Regional Priorities Alignment Framework at an October general membership meeting, outlining a shared strategy to diversify the regional economy over the next decade, supertalk.fm reported.
Framework Identifies Five Core Themes for Regional Growth
The Masters Leadership class of the Gulf Coast Business Council developed the framework to align existing local plans across three counties. The document organizes shared outcomes under five distinct themes: workforce, education, and the economy; infrastructure and site-readiness; housing, communities, and quality of place; resilience and natural resources; and leadership, collaboration, and accountability.
Jamie Miller, president and CEO of the Gulf Coast Business Council, is transitioning to Mississippi Power as senior director of economic, workforce, and community development, working alongside CEO Pedro Cherry. Miller will continue to co-chair the Coast Forward Committee with Dave Dennis through the transition.
Coastal Mississippi Targets Advanced Manufacturing via Megasite
The initiative targets long-term economic diversification away from heavy reliance on gaming and government sectors. Proposed structural steps include establishing a Coastal Mississippi Economic Development Partnership that brings together the three counties, local ports, airports, military installations, the colleges and universities, and the private sector.
The framework prioritizes creating a large, pre-certified, shovel-ready megasite equipped with necessary infrastructure to attract advanced manufacturing projects requiring more resources than any single county can secure independently. Remaining BP money would be directed toward these high-ROI projects.
Coast Forward Committee Translates Framework into Blueprint
Proponents point to regions like Huntsville as a working model for capturing advanced manufacturing through coordinated research parks, federal anchors, and unified marketing. Local economic development organizations will continue their current municipal operations while the regional structure acts as a multiplier for larger opportunities.
The Coast Forward Committee holds the assignment of translating the alignment framework into an actionable, fully funded blueprint. Leaders across municipal governments, ports, and state agencies face the next test of turning the document into implemented policy decisions.
The next decade will be defined by the choices local leaders make together.
