Metropolitan Police Investigate 2018 Letter Regarding the Duchess's Father
The Duchess said a letter sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018 was subsequently shared with her. That document outlined troubling accusations against her father, prompting assurances from authorities that they were actively investigating the matter, according to her public statement.

London’s Metropolitan Police stated they were aware of media reports concerning officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command passing on a letter that year. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police noted that internal inquiries were underway to confirm the report.
Meanwhile, the Philippines Department of Justice confirmed that the matter is currently under active investigation. Nicholas Ty, the Philippine justice undersecretary, told Reuters that the anti-trafficking and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children task force in Cebu is leading the inquiry.

Discovery in Cebu and Family Divisions
The allegations surfaced after Thomas Markle Jr., the duchess’s half-brother, reported finding a large stash of child sexual abuse images in boxes while clearing out his father’s home in the Philippine city of Cebu.
Thomas Markle Jr. told the Sun that he felt he had no option but to report the material to police in the Philippines and contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States. He stated that he has cut ties with his father and would only speak to him if called to give evidence.
In contrast, Thomas Markle Sr., who is currently recovering in the United States after a left leg amputation, denied the accusations in an interview with the Daily Mail, calling them sick lies intended to destroy him. Samantha Markle, Meghan’s half-sister, also defended their father, asserting the claims lack merit and accusing her brother of fabricating stories to secure media money.
The Impact on Family Distance and Royal Relations
Meghan explained that the allegations and subsequent police assurances were the sole reason she maintained distance from her father and chose not to allow him to have contact with her children. She noted that while the newly uncovered breadth of the material is sickening, her priority remains the safety of innocent children and the pursuit of justice.

King Charles ultimately walked Meghan down the aisle at St George’s Chapel when her father cited health issues.
Authorities have not yet concluded their digital forensic examinations or confirmed the full scope of any international probes, leaving inquiries by law enforcement agencies in both the United Kingdom and the Philippines ongoing.
